Google Takes Charge with Fiber Optic Internet Service

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

My friend Carlos shared a post with me today from the Google blog. The basic premise is that Google is going to experiment with setting up fiber optic internet service in certain cities across the country. They plan to offer 1 Gigabit speeds for roughly 500,000 people.

However, if you read between the lines, what I think might be going on is Google is taking a stab at the other ISPs on the net neutrality front. For those who haven’t heard of the net neutrality issue: Some of your typical internet providers may one day limit internet access to those who pay top dollar, making the internet regulated in a way where only those who can afford it will get the best service. This could have serious ramifications for scrappy start up websites and lower funded, open source projects. Net neutrality is what allowed websites like Google to come about.

To me it seems like Google is taking on the challenge of becoming an ISP to beat the typical, monopolist ISPs at their own game. Not only are they going to provide an “open” infrastructure, they are planning on providing a infrastructure that is vastly superior to what any of the other competitors can release to the public. If they successfully lay down a powerful fiber optic network in a short amount of time, the other ISPs will lose their ground on the net neutrality issue. So Hooray for Google! I have always disliked my ISPs. They play in a non-competitive world and give poor service.

The key is the “open” network. Google wants to build an open network so they can share their network with other ISPs. This will kill the monopolistic system of the current internet provider model. Thus, removing the power of these companies and their ability to lobby for non-net-neutrality.

Morrissey - The Saddest Days Are Rad

Friday, January 15th, 2010

I saw this art piece at the L.A. Artwalk last night. I busted up laughing. It’s a skateboarding reference to the old Powell Peralta / Bones Brigade skull logo replaced by good ole Morrissey stinking it up. And the best part is the overlaying text: “The Saddest Days Are Rad”.

The Grouch - Artzy

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I really enjoy the animation in this video. I will have to say The Grouch is an acquired taste. I really like his honest, no BS style. But if you are not into underground hip hop, he might not do it for you.

Wooden Wheels by The Head Change

Monday, November 9th, 2009

ToobBox.com has a long history with El Skate Shop. This song in particular was “freestyled” at El Skate Shop back in 2004. The famous DJ Stress was jamming with resident guitarist El Jefe and came up with this tune on the spot. Stress was starring at a Shorty’s “Legalize Skateboarding Clock” on the wall at the shop a suddenly got inspired to blurt out this song.

This song is dedicated to the millions of skateboarders who have been hassled by cops day in and day out. It’s for that 12 year kid who has been thrown to the ground, kneed in the back and hand cuffed by that 40 year old, severely obese cop. It’s for Shon Rueter, who spent a few days in LA County Jail because of skateboarding tickets. It’s for all the skaters who have had their personal property confiscated by the boys in blue. This song is for you.

Skaters: Chris Hernandez, Chris Treiber, Robert Brune, Mike Davidson, Matt Bublitz, Abe Olague, Danny Ramirez, Chris Joya and John Thomson.

Mountain Bike Race Through Favelas In First Person

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

This video is nuts. It’s a bike race course that goes through a Brazilian neighborhood that is super steep and narrow. The course consists of ramps, stair cases, dirt patches, open sewage and humans.

What I don’t understand is: How the hell does this narrator race down this narrow course and narrate at the same time?

Camp’s Buttered Steaks

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

I couldn’t believe these things when I found them at the market. I was looking for burgers and I thought I saw some kind of meat patty with a chunk of butter smacked square in the middle it. But since it was behind glass that was partially foggy, I wasn’t sure if it was true or not. Sure enough, it was true. These things are gnarly!
